Hazard Warnings

Accidents happen – a jam tail builds after a turn, debris falls on the road or slippery conditions develop ahead. With TomTom Hazard Warnings, your drivers and automated vehicles know what is happening in real time and how to safely get around it.

TomTom Hazard Warnings creates time-critical signals that alert drivers and vehicles to hazards as they happen. This gives more time to anticipate and adjust accordingly, increasing safety and comfort.

Features and benefits

With the fastest notifications, widest range of features and highest number of data sources on the market, TomTom Hazard Warnings rounds out our portfolio, providing drivers and automated vehicles with up-to-date traffic, road and weather warnings.

Fastest push alerts

Traditional systems work on a request-response model: an accident happens, it’s loaded onto the server and then waits for the vehicle to request new information on a particular stretch of road. This can take several minutes – at high speeds that delay can translate to long distances. We push alerts out, sending hazard warnings to the vehicle within seconds.

Widest range of features offered

We offer nine different types of hazards such as Jam Tail Warnings, Broken Down Vehicle and Slippery Roads. This information enables a variety of use cases including enabling early visual and audio warnings of safety-critical incidents, planning the safest route with current conditions in mind, and adjusting speed in poor conditions.

Industry’s largest probe network

Thanks to the largest probe network in the automotive industry, we combine information from 600+ million connected devices and third-party sources to show drivers and vehicles exactly what’s on the road ahead.

Increased safety for automated vehicles

TomTom Hazard Warnings are making safe automated driving (AD) a reality. In lower levels of autonomy, the vehicle receives an alert and can adjust its behavior, with the driver maintaining control. When hazards are detected, the driver can be prompted to either deactivate the AD function or the system can automatically change behavior.

Most comprehensive coverage

Our real-time traffic data covers 3.7 billion kilometers of driven road networks. TomTom Hazard Warnings uses OpenLR ™ location referencing to pinpoint a hazard’s exact position on any type of road and quickly transmit that location to the vehicle. With coverage in more than 80 countries, you can alert drivers and vehicles to hazards around the world.
