TomTom showcases open mapping practices at State of the Map Europe 2024
Łódź (Poland) recently played host to a community of mappers, developers, activists and other location tech enthusiasts at the State of the Map Europe 2024 (July 18-21). Their mission: to share knowledge, work together across borders and promote free and open cartography worldwide.
As a longstanding supporter of OpenStreetMap (OSM), which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, TomTom was active in helping organize this event. Dominika Armatys, Salim Baidoun, Chiara Angiolini, Przemysław Boszczar and Shaundrea Kenyon who lead TomTom's community-building efforts spoke at the event about the company's initiatives in OSM.
Showcasing TomTom’s dedication to open mapping, the presentations emphasized collaboration with OSM communities, local chapters, organizations and universities and addressed impactful mapping projects tackling climate change and disaster relief. TomTom’s Partner Development Manager Chiara Angiolini presented details about TomTom's collaboration with Meta, Wikimedia Italia and the city of Milan, to improve the OSM pedestrian map data. Also, TomTom intern Przemysław Boszczar delivered a talk introducing the concept of micromapping - focusing on detailed mapping in OpenStreetMap for small areas. The event offered insightful roundtable discussions and live sessions for participants to learn from other organizations about their contributions to OpenStreetMap and the data integration challenges they've overcome. But the event was not all about work! Between presentations and workshops, participants also bonded by mapping Łódź, a city famous for its industrial and cultural scene, fostering connections in the ever-growing community. As is the case with all the events organized by the OSM community, plenty of map edits were done to improve OSM here as well.Coming together
Events such as this are essential for advancing open mapping practices and enabling everyone to participate in and benefit from map-making. These events showcase the improvement of editing techniques, crisis mapping, and the mapping of areas important to indigenous groups and communities that are often overlooked on maps. Ultimately, bringing together people with diverse skills and resources is the most effective way to foster a strong community of mappers. The Łódź event was nothing short of a celebration of all that we've achieved together and the incredible teamwork that's advancing open mapping practices. The energy and ideas we shared will, undoubtedly, power the OSM community's innovations for years to come. Stay tuned for exciting news related to TomTom and OpenStreetMap.* Required field.
