Simplifying transportation in busy cities with navigable maps and traffic insights

THTC and TomTom success story

Keeping a busy city moving takes precise, real-time information. In the middle east, THTC makes that information easily available to local traffic authorities, helping them keep roads safe and traffic flowing. To this end, THTC uses TomTom Live Traffic, TomTom Hazards and TomTom Move Portal

A technology company established in 1999, Transport Hi-Tech Consultants (THTC) specializes in navigation, GIS, telematics, ITS, smart city solutions and smart mobility. With offices in Dubai-UAE, and Al Khobar-Saudi Arabia, THTC delivers innovative traffic management and analysis services and products to government and private organizations in the Middle East. THTC's role in traffic management became particularly evident when the region hosted a number of large-scale world events in recent years

Efforts for efficiency

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region’s infrastructural and mobility developments have benefited from THTC in more ways than one – especially when hosting those large-scale events. Steering through the intricacies of traffic flow is grueling at the best of times, and during big events authorities often struggle to ensure efficient mobility across host cities.

THTC and TomTom success story

For instance, during the FIFA Cup 2022, hosted in Qatar, the traffic governing body grappled with time constraints, technological limitations, traffic data needs and a tight budget. Its priority was to facilitate timely transportation for VIPs, match referees and teams, minimizing travel time from accommodations to venues and to prevent match delays — overall, THTC had to ensure, from a transportation point of view, that the event went without a hitch.

Assisting the authorities in this gigantic task, THTC leveraged its relationship with long-term partner TomTom, making use of its advanced traffic technologies.

To run the event, THTC monitored over 1,500 different routes and travel corridors used by the event’s delegation — these routes were meticulously researched by the operating authority team to accommodate the diverse travel requirements of VIPs, match referees and teams. Once these routes were defined, the transport technology company used TomTom’s Move Portal to gather up to the minute traffic data to assess road conditions in real-time. For ease of use, these routes were coded into an API that allowed them to be easily integrated into a user-friendly Interactive Dashboard used by local traffic authorities.

A year later, Qatar hosted another huge event, the AFC Asian Cup, and THTC was again at the ready to ensure its delegation’s road travel went smoothly. With strong confidence in TomTom’s real-time traffic data used in the previous year and having already developed many of the principles and technology for at the last event, THTC knew exactly what needed to be delivered.

By developing another customized and bespoke interactive dashboard and data stream, local authorities were able to make informed decisions and have a real-time bird's eye view of what was happening on the roads. It allowed event management staff to select the best routes for VIPs, referees and teams to move efficiently through varying traffic conditions and reach their destinations, and matches, without delay.

As a result, the technology saved time and money for the event organizers. Attendees, athletes and VIPs praised the streamlined transportation process, contributing to the event’s overall success.

In a nutshell, TomTom's high-quality, real-time traffic data enabled precise route monitoring to track traffic flow and travel speeds on key routes, while THTC's two decades of experience in the GCC region provided crucial local knowledge for customizing the dashboard to meet the event's specific needs and to understand the unique needs of the area.

The success of the Interactive Mobility Dashboard solution in Qatar demonstrates TomTom and THTC's combined expertise and reliability. As the Middle East undergoes rapid urbanization and continues to host international events, that the whole world watches, investing in smart mobility solutions is vital.

With real-time traffic tech, and support from the likes of THTC and TomTom, the region's government and private sector are poised to shape the future of smart mobility by embracing innovation.
