The TomTom EV guide is here | TomTom Newsroom

Whether you’re already on board, or still making up your mind, the automotive world is going electric and we have to adapt. It may seem simple, but for many, it’s a big change. There’s new technology to figure out, new habits to adopt, new ways of planning trips. But we’ve got you covered — our introductory guide to EVs is here to help you, or anyone thinking of ‘going electric,’ take the leap.

Our beginner’s guide covers everything you need to know about EVs: why EVs are on the up, how they work, how to charge them, how to drive them, their terminology and how to overcome range and charging anxiety.

Get to grips with going electric

Soon, combustion engine vehicles will be a thing of the past, or maybe just playthings for motoring enthusiasts, and we’ll all be driving cars powered by electrons.

Indeed, there’s a lot to get your head around – our guide will help with that — if you’re completely new to electric vehicles, but you’re not alone. Globally, most people haven’t gone electric yet and still need to learn the ropes.

According to Our World in Data, in 2023, over 80% of new car sales globally are still of the combustion engine, fossil fueled variety. Countries like the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and China are ahead of the curve, thanks to strong government support, well built-out infrastructure and various incentives. Everywhere else in the world, however, is lagging. In the United Kingdom, just 24% of new car sales are electric, in the United States it’s around 10%.

It's time to electrify your driving

Maybe you’re already driving an EV, and if so, great! It’s likely you’ll already know everything in the guide, but perhaps you’ve got a friend, colleague or overly skeptical uncle who’s yet to be convinced of EVs. If you think their concerns about all the change will be allayed if they read the guide, send it their way and help them take the leap.

If you’re new to EVs and just diving in, enjoy the guide, we hope it helps make your EV drive, simple and less stressful.

Forget worrying about range, charging anxiety is now the prime concern for EV drivers

Today, most drivers no longer worry if their electric vehicle (EV) will go the distance. But when they do need to charge, they still face some pressing questions: Will there be available chargers at the next charging point? How long will it take to charge? How much will it cost, and how can I pay?

The Future of Driving is Electric | TomTom Newsroom
explainers and insights

The future of driving is electric, here's why

By now, we should all know what electrical vehicles are. They’ve become a mainstream part of the collective consciousness of the automobile world in recent years, mostly thanks to their surge in popularity and the focus on government policy that’s effectively banning fossil fuel vehicles. Even so, there are varying opinions as to whether EVs are ’the future’ however – and that’s understandable, given that they’re still relatively new technology and how they challenge what we know of driving and refueling our vehicles.

In the age of digital mapmaking, what does the word ‘map’ even mean? It’s all about the context

Close your eyes and think of a map... What’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it an unwieldy paper map that unfolds to lay bare the truths of a certain area? Maybe you think of a hand-drawn map of a fantasy universe constructed to tell a story? Or do you picture a modern digital map with points of interest, zoom functions and colored lines pointing out a clear route for you to follow? The word map means different things to different people, and as mapping technology evolves so does the definition of what a map is.
