The amount of data going into an ever-growing global map that updates to reflect real-world changes is hard to fathom. Yet for Marco Pfrang, such complex datasets are exactly what he likes to work with. He’s made an impact with data and analytics at ING, Adevinta and Google. Now, Marco is playing a pivotal role in the future of mapping as Director of Product Management at TomTom. We talked to him to hear his story and find out what excites him about his journey ahead.

Both technology and business have always been a source of inspiration for Marco. “I found computer science just as fascinating as corporate finance,” he shares. So, despite his childhood dreams of becoming a pilot, he gravitated to a career in product management – a field where he can blend his drive for innovative tech with strategic, data-driven decision-making that helps companies grow.

A career built on data

For over 15 years, Marco’s work has revolved around data and machine learning at scale. For example, “at ING, we built products that could handle world-scale payment analytics, as well as a machine learning platform fully based on open-source technologies,” he says. He also pioneered generative AI applications at Adevinta and ran machine vision initiatives at Google.

To build on his experience, Marco was drawn to the world of location technology at TomTom, offering a unique position in the data and analytics space. In case you’re unfamiliar, TomTom has partnered with big tech companies and open-source communities to create TomTom Orbis Maps – a first-of-its-kind, incredibly powerful map based on large-scale collaborative mapmaking. All data is provided or verified by TomTom and delivered to customers across a wide range of industries. The opportunity for Marco to do what he does best in this innovative landscape was too good to pass up.

Leading analytics in location tech

Marco now oversees the rich analytics domain for the Orbis Maps Platform and Platform Products. “We drive product quality by providing transparency and building data platforms,” he says. Some of the analytics solutions he manages with his teams include consistency checks across map layers, providing quality metrics insights, running scalable machine learning models and A/B testing.

With deep insight into the products, Marco also accelerates development. “We run initiatives that use the data science capabilities in analytics to directly improve our products,” he says. All in all, Marco helps ensure TomTom maintains the highest standards of product quality and innovation.

The future of data and analytics at TomTom

As far as the cutting edge goes, “TomTom’s products are already sophisticated data and analytics solutions,” Marco says. He’s excited to make an impact. “I want to be part of TomTom’s journey towards building a real-time, high-quality map, making full autonomous driving a reality with maps, and continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible with data.”

“In the future, I see TomTom expanding into new data and analytics products that fully integrate customer data and TomTom data.”

As the data and analytics landscape evolves, Marco envisions TomTom having the capabilities to fully integrate customer data with its own proprietary data, unlocking new insights and opportunities. “For instance, customers that have their own telemetry data will be able to combine it with TomTom’s maps and expertise to generate novel insights,” he says.

The data shows: people matter

To create the best products, Marco focuses on the customer and the people the product will ultimately benefit. He was happy to find a shared attitude and approach at TomTom. “Every conversation at TomTom quickly circles back to how we can create value for our customers,” he says.  Alongside the data and analytics, Marco’s colleagues are another one of the reasons he enjoys TomTom. “I get to work with truly high-caliber professionals who really know what they are doing. Discussions are often concise and quickly lead to a specific outcome,” he notes. Having the right environment equips Marco with everything he needs to carry out his vision and make a real impact – both in the data and analytics space and in the lives of people around the world who benefit from mapping and location tech every day.
