Solving urban mobility challenges: TomTom's expert explains
As the world changes, so does the way we move. As cities grow, daily commutes also grow, elevating traffic volume, congestion and pollution. Add to this, time loss and higher fuel expenses for drivers. To understand how to find a sustainable solution for this problem, we spoke with Ralf-Peter Schäfer, TomTom’s VP Product Management of Traffic, Travel and Routing.
Watch Ralf-Peter share his insights on innovating for urban connectivity
Awareness of climate change is accelerating the demand for sustainable models of mobility. Ralf-Peter urges traffic authorities and city planners to rethink connectivity. He notes that innovations must ensure that traffic management is efficient as well as eco-friendly.
Smooth traffic and connectivity greatly improves the quality of life among urban residents. And the current state of urban traffic demands refinement.
The most recent TomTom Traffic Index found that in 2023, car drivers in Paris spent an extra 120 hours driving due to congestion, which is 10 hours and 44 minutes more than the previous year. Parisian car drivers spent €934 (approximately $1,012) for fuel in 2023, out of which €288 (approximately $312) could have been saved if it were not for the congestion.
With Paris hosting the Olympics this year, it will be interesting to see how the city changes and how the impact of the Games lasts. As Ralf-Peter says, a positive shift is underway.
