TomTom is hiring for an Observability Engineer to perform a critical role that will contribute to TomTom’s success in the online services world.


What you’ll do

  • Work with internal/external stakeholders to shape the architectural design and implementation of new and existing systems to provide visibility into the performance of our customer business services. Where possible standardize cross-company
  • Ensure all key services are measured, monitored, and properly alerting
  • Work in a collaborative environment, working together across many teams to ensure our systems are performing as well as possible
  • Configure the four golden signals of monitoring, latency, traffic, errors & saturation across our customer's online services
  • Create performance dashboards for engineers, NOC & non-technical stakeholders
  • Design, write and maintain software to improve the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of the services
  • Engage in service capacity planning and demand forecasting, anticipating performance bottlenecks
  • Establish performance thresholds & integrate alerts into event management tool
  • Conduct/contribute to RFPs to standardize visibility & observability tooling across TomTom’s engineering teams


What you’ll need

  • Minimum of 5 years of industry experience in software engineering, SRE or system engineering
  • Experience in making a system / service observable
  • Knowledge of open standards in the observability domain; i.e. OpenCensus, OpenTracing and their merger OpenTelemetry
  • Experience supporting a service providing platform, realizing the importance of availability and predictability;
  • Good knowledge of Kubernetes
  • Excellent knowledge of tools used for monitoring, logging and tracing (such as Grafana, Scalyr, Cortex, Thanos, Prometheus, AlertSite, Statuscake, ServiceNow & PagerDuty)
  • Experience with operating mission-critical workloads in large-scale cloud infrastructure; AWS, Azure or a similar cloud environment
  • Demonstrated experience of coding in production environment (e.g. Python, Java, C++)
  • Experience in the Linux environment and a good understanding of its fundamentals and internals: filesystems and modern memory management, threads and processes, the user/kernel-space divide, etc.
  • Strong sense of ownership and drive
  • Expertise in designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems
  • Bachelor’s in computer science / Engineering or Equivalent

As TomTom’s customer advocate for all operational needs, we manage processes such as Service Desk, Incident, Event, Problem, Change, Availability, Service Level, Service Management and Reporting. We also manage a range of platforms to ensure processes function efficiently, and take on Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) to ensure our systems are reliable, scalable & auto-recoverable. On our team, you’ll help ensure TomTom’s business operates efficiently and the services we provide are best delivered to our customers.
