Transforming mobility consulting with precise, network-wide traffic intelligence.

Ramboll knows that smarter mobility decisions start with seeing the road network clearly.
The global consultancy with 18,000 employees helps municipalities, road authorities, planners and developers make better mobility and infrastructure decisions. The problem was that traditional traffic counting methods left Ramboll and its clients with limited access to consistent and complete data. Reduced visibility at scale made it difficult to understand key aspects of traffic behavior and deliver meaningful results.
To expand its smart mobility offering and enhance its advisory capabilities, the company needed a scalable and reliable traffic data source capable of providing consistent insights across road networks, regions and projects.
Discovering TomTom Traffic intelligence, Ramboll found what it was looking for.
In 2020, Ramboll integrated TomTom Traffic and the TomTom Move Portal into its mobility services, making a suite of data-driven traffic products readily available and easy to work with.
With Traffic Stats, Ramboll can analyze traffic speeds and volumes across entire road networks, while Origin-Destination Analysis provides a clear understanding of how people and vehicles move between zones. A favored capability is Select Link Analysis, which visualizes how traffic flows through specific road segments and across the wider network — unlocking insights that were previously difficult to capture consistently across projects and geographies.
The combination of robust data and intuitive tools enables Ramboll to deliver deeper, more precise traffic assessments while strengthening confidence in results.
Beyond the analyses, the Move Portal’s intuitive interface made it possible for Ramboll to expand the role of its business. It now also provides training and support for the Move Portal, helping even non-technical users at municipalities and road authorities explore the data themselves, use it for planning and validation, and apply the insights in their own decision-making. High satisfaction with the data, customization and ease of use has led to increased trust and deeper client relationships.
A Swedish municipality wanted to answer an important question: how much traffic was cutting through residential streets and school zones instead of staying on main roads? Using TomTom Origin-Destination Analysis and Select Link Analysis, Ramboll identified that roughly 15% of vehicles in the area were using local streets as shortcuts. TomTom’s detailed, network-wide visibility enabled the municipality to make informed decisions about redirecting traffic flows, reducing impacts on residential communities and improving safety around schools.
Ramboll also works with municipalities that want to better understand congestion and delays at intersections, where traditional detectors like loop counts, radar and cameras are often limited to the intersection itself. That means visibility on what’s happening between and around these locations is missing. With TomTom’s granular traffic data, cities can analyze queue lengths, traversal travel times and speed patterns across entire corridors — including how congestion builds before and beyond intersections. It’s easy to adjust the area size and get visualized reports. Clients can also use live and historical data to measure performance improvements and evaluate modeled infrastructure changes to back decisions with data.

Over the past five years, Ramboll has used TomTom data in more than 300 assignments, with around 45 Nordic clients now using the Move Portal directly. By embedding high-quality, consistent traffic data into its workflows and delivering the Move Portal directly, Ramboll is helping clients validate assumptions, strengthen planning decisions and build a clearer understanding of how road networks function in the real world.
As cities face growing pressure to design safer, smarter and sustainable transport systems, the role of reliable mobility data will keep expanding. Mobility customers are increasingly data hungry, wanting real, continuous, multi-purpose insights. Giving this data visibility is key for the future of transportation planning. Ramboll is well positioned to lead the way with TomTom insights at the heart of its services.
