TomTom’s EV experts speak

At TomTom, we’ve been helping people and businesses move through the world with more ease, efficiency and reduced environmental impact for over three decades.

As we all strive to increase our sustainability and reduce CO2, electric vehicles will play an ever more important role in mobility and transport. It’s a massive transition that’s felt across the world, everyone from businesses to individual drivers are facing electrification challenges and are having to get their head around this new approach to motoring, logistics and movement.

On the surface, EVs look quite complicated, but they don’t’ have to be. While our tech is helping make driving an EV easier with dedicated EV routing, charging services and points of interest, before you get in the driver’s seat there’s a lot you can prepare yourself for, in this guide we will help you get a handle on the basics of EV ownership, so you’re ready to make the leap and so that when you do start driving an EV, it’s as easy as it should be.

Electric vehicles are going to be a part of our future, there’s no doubt about that. While this is certain, there is still a long way to go to perfect the EV driving experience.

Over the past ten years, the auto industry has developed incredibly fast, creating and adopting new technologies and production methods that have brought us lots of high performing, long-range EVs — EVs that are more than adequate for the majority of drivers. Despite how good, and popular, EVs are becoming, drivers still experience many anxieties: charging anxiety and range anxiety being two of the most common.

The solution for these problems won’t come from one place alone, it’s going to take a collective and integrated effort. As mapmakers we have the power to bring all the data, information, knowledge and content together and present it to drivers in the optimal way, to make driving and living with an EV as easy as it should be.

We have all the parts of the puzzle, now we’re putting it together.

Electric Vehicles Segment Lead

We are now experiencing the largest paradigm shift in mobility since the motor car was invented. As it goes with such monumental shifts, it progresses with the pace of two steps forward and one step backwards.

The most interesting challenge to overcome in the coming years is to win the hearts and minds (and wallets) of the majority, the people who now drive diesel and gasoline vehicles. People that need their vehicle for their commute, to visit relatives over the weekend, to go on ski holidays and take their kids to school. Just normal folks going about their lives, who need easy to use and reliable vehicles — can we get them to switch to EV? I believe we can, by making all the things related to charging and long journeys as easy and intuitive as possible, that’s where we at TomTom come in.

We are committed to the making the EV ready for mass adoption.
