The ideal vehicle of tomorrow is autonomous, designed to reduce driver distraction, increase safety and decrease road congestion. This future relies on Highway Pilot, an intelligent combination of automated sub-systems for lateral and longitudinal vehicle control.
What is Highway Pilot?
Similar to autopilot systems in airplanes, Highway Pilot automates such driving functions as speed control, lane keeping, and lane exiting and entering. When the driver turns the system on, it’s able to match the vehicle’s speed to traffic flow. This is all done in line with observing the legal speed limit and maintaining the required distance from the vehicle ahead. It also has a stop-and-go function that can be used in heavy traffic. In more advanced systems, Highway Pilot will follow a certain route from the navigation system at a safe and comfortable speed, as well as keeping the correct lane.
How does Highway Pilot work?
Highway Pilot systems work in conjunction with the vehicle’s sensors. As sensors are limited in range and in poor weather conditions, high-definition (HD) maps are needed as a safety net to see the road when they fail.

For example, in sharp curves on highways, drivers often feel more comfortable and safe driving at a speed lower than the actual speed limit. HD maps contain accurate lane-level curvature and banking information from which an appropriate advised speed is derived. Driving at the advised speed, rather than the legal speed limit, increases driver safety. If the driver needs to overtake a vehicle during the curve, data from the HD map provides more context and awareness for the automated driving system, safely planning its path and the next maneuver. There are many more examples – merging lanes, toll booths, obstructed view, poor lane markings, blocked signs. They all rely on HD maps to work in conjunction with onboard sensors to give more context so automated driving systems can accurately localize, plan the path and safely operate the next required driving maneuver.

TomTom HD Map – delivered by AutoStream – can be deployed in various centralized and decentralized vehicle architectures. AutoStream is a complete solution that comes with client software and easy-to-integrate APIs. In case there are multiple AD applications running on different ECUs, AutoStream can be extended with an ADASIS v3 provider, through our partnership with Elektrobit. Together, we delivered the industry-first ADASIS v3 horizon with HD map data.

With this HD Map data, a Virtual Horizon is created ahead of the vehicle to communicate the road ahead over the vehicle network to the AD ECUs.
