The Dragon's Back race holds a fearsome reputation as one of the toughest mountain races in the world. The distance and elevation statistics don't tell the full story - the challenge here is the extreme and rugged terrain, the weather, the navigation and the mountaincraft involved. Typically around 50% of competitors won't make it to the finish, and many of those that do are put to the most extreme test of character and ability. The faster runners may be out on the hill for around 10 hours per day, the slowest will be closer to 18 hours, and therefore sacrifice sleep in a vicious battle against the body and mind. Hidden valleys, wild moorland, exposed ridges and rocky scrambles all combine to make this an adventure like no other. The North Face athlete Jez DNF'ed in 2015 but returned in 2017 to claim a 5th place finish. Whilst the full five day route is likely to be out of the reach of all but the most hardened fell runners, there are many great sections which can be enjoyed on their own, exploring plenty of hiddens part of Wales.
