Barlavento - facing the wind - is the western part of the Algarve, often referred to as a rock salvalve because of the up to 50 meters high cliffs. The area to the east of Albufeira is the Sotavento, the most sheltered part of the island, the Sandalgarve, where the coast is often surrounded by miles of sand dunes. The tour leads through the Serra de Monchique, the only mountain range of the Barlavento.
