As the famous rock paintings in the cave of Altamira prove, the region has been inhabited for at least 15,000 years. Asturias was the starting point of the Reconquista, the conquest of the Iberian peninsula by the Christian population, which took place from 718 AD onwards and lasted over 700 years.
