Question

What is map activation?

Answer

Important:
This article only applies to the following products:

  • TomTom NAVIGATOR (all versions)
  • TomTom MOBILE / MOBILE 5
  • Maps prior to version 7.xxx used with TomTom GO, ONE, XL, RIDER, DAIHATSU,  ECLIPSE and TOYOTA. Maps with version 7 or higher are activated automatically on these devices.
Click here to learn how to check the version of your map.

To use your TomTom navigation product, you need a code that activates the map. The activation mechanism is intended to protect our maps from illegal copying, while still being easy to use.

TomTom policy is that you can activate your map on one device. Click here to download the full version of the TomTom End User License Agreement (EULA).

Product code

The TomTom product code consists of 15 characters. It is a unique code to prove that you have an official TomTom product and hence you need it for product activation.

We recommend storing your product code in a safe place.

You can find your product code in one of these places:

  • on the 'product code card' in your TomTom box
  • in your CD jewel case, behind one of the CDs
  • in TomTom HOME 2.x by clicking Manage my device, then expanding Maps under the Items on device tab and then clicking More info.

Click here to see pictures explaining where to find your product code.

If there is no product code in the box, return the product to the point of purchase.

Device code

The device code consists of 10 characters. It is different for every device, so make sure you use the device code for your own device, on which you want to use the map.
When you activate manually the device code is shown on your device during activation.

Click here for help on where to find your device code.

Activation code

The activation code consists of 15 characters. It is generated from the product code and the device code. This activation code is required to run the map on your device. It only enables the map to run on that particular device.

Automatic activation
In most cases the software is activated automatically using an existing internet connection.

Manual activation
In some cases you may have to manually activate your software. In this case the product code and the device code generate a unique activation code. Enter this code on your device.
Go to www.ttcode.com to obtain an activation code for manual activation.

What to do if the activation fails

  • Make sure you have the latest version of the TomTom application installed on your navigation device or PDA / phone. For assistance see: How to check for and install an updated version of the TomTom application?
Note: For previous versions of  PDA and mobile phone navigation, check www.tomtom.com/downloads.

  • The map collection for Western Europe (DVD) is an accessory. On a PDA or phone you can only activate this accessory if you already have a full version of the TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 application and map.
