Software Activation What is "Software Activation"? Inside the TomTom Navigator CD-ROM box is a unique code number. The very first time you run the installer, it will ask you to enter this code. That's all. The installer will take care of the rest. It will retrieve an access code for your product from our internet server and unlock TomTom Navigator on your PocketPC. But suppose my PocketPC crashes? Don't worry. First of all, your access code is stored in many places: in your device "registry" (which survives soft resets), in your "PocketPC backup", optionally on your SD-card (which survives hard resets), and even on the hard disk of your PC (i.e. your installer will remember it even if your PocketPC loses it). On top of that, our internet server will reproduce every code we've ever provided as often as needed. What if I buy a new Pocket PC? Your product code can be used to activate TomTom Navigator on a second device. This is, however, ONLY possible 7 days after the first activation. Once you have activated the software on the second device you will need to wait 6 months until the product code can be used again, on a third device. From then onwards your product code can be used on a new device every 6 months. My Pocket PC asks for an Activation Code If you try to run TomTom Navigator and your Pocket PC asks for an Activation Code then TomTom Navigator has not yet been activated on your device. You will need to place the Pocket PC back into its cradle and re-run the installer. It is important that you enter the product code when requested. Also, please ensure that your PC is connected to the internet when you run the installer. At one stage, the installer will ask you for permission to use your internet connection to carry out online activation. TomTom Navigator will only be activated if you accept this. If your Pocket PC still asks for an Activation Code then please go to http://www.ttcode.com where you can activate your software manually. Trouble activating a second hand TomTom Navigator 2 TomTom Navigator 2 requires online software activation. All copies of TomTom Navigator 2 are sold with a product code. This product code can be used to activate the software on two devices (read more about Software Activation). Second hand TomTom Navigator 2 products are likely to have already been activated once or more by the first buyer and the product code may therefore no longer be valid. For this reason we advise our customers not to purchase TomTom Navigator 2 second hand. If you have already purchased a second hand TomTom Navigator 2 product and cannot activate the software, we suggest you return it to the seller. Navigator asks for the activation code again I installed Navigator II and activated it. Now I installed a map from the Western Europe CD, but Navigator asks for the activation code again. Why is that? Answer: In Navigator, you don't activate the program, but a collection of maps. The Western Europe CD has its own product code, which is different from that of the full Navigator product you own. To open a map from the Western Europe CD, you should obtain an activation code using the Western Europe product code. Product already activated! I bought a new PocketPC and installed Navigator II on it. Now I will need to activate, but the installation program says: "Product already activated". What can I do? Answer:Your product code can be used to activate TomTom Navigator on a second device. This is, however, ONLY possible 7 days after the first activation. If you have already activated TomTom Navigator on second device, you will need to wait 6 months until the product code can be used again, on a third device. From then onwards your product code can be used on a new device every 6 months. TTcode.com, for software activation I have searched www.tomtom.com to activate, but couldn't find anything. How do I activate? Answer: A special website is set up for software activation. You can find it here: http://www.ttcode.com How can I activate? When I installed TomTom Navigator, the setup program asked to go on-line, but then an error occurred. How can I activate? Answer: Just install TomTom Navigator without going on-line. When you first start the program on your PocketPC, it will give you instructions on how to activate. Cannot find the product code in the CD box. While installing TomTom Navigator, Setup asks for a product code. However, I cannot find the product code in the CD box. Answer: Normally, the product code is located on a sticker in the CD box, on the CD tray behind the CD. If you have a double CD box, it might be behind the second CD. The sticker can also be located on the inlay card of the CD box. Not a correct activation code! When my PocketPC asked for an activation code, I entered the code that was in the CD box. However, it complains that this is not a correct activation code! Answer: The code that is inside the CD box is a product code, not an activation code. When you start the program for the first time, your PocketPC will display a device code. If you have these two codes, go to the following website: http://www.ttcode.com and follow the instructions given. Here you will receive your activation code.

GPS-related Questions Can I use TomTom Navigator 2 with my current GPS? The answer is almost certainly "Yes". TomTom Navigator 2 supports even more GPS devices and protocols than TomTom Navigator 1, including any NMEA 0183v2 or Sirf compatible GPS Receiver (at rates from 4800 to 115200 baud, and including Bluetooth variants). This obviously includes all TomTom-branded GPS devices, as well as the Delorme TripMate, the Destinator GPS, the Emtac CRUX, Emtac GPSJAQ, the Emtac Wireless GPS, The Garmin Etrex, the Garmin GPS12, the Garmin GPSIII, the GNS GPS Card CF II, The Haicom, The Holux GM-200, GM-210 and GM-270CF, The Navman GPS1000, GPS2000 and GPS100, the Peiker DR, the Pocket CoPilot GPS Jacket, the Pocket Track, The Pretec CompactGPS, The Pretec CompactGPS-LP, The Rikaline GPS-6010, The Scania Falcom A3D, and the StreetNav iGPS. I cannot get my Toshiba PocketPC to work with TomTom Navigator On the latest models of the Toshiba PocketPC, such as the Toshiba E350 and perhaps the Toshiba E330, some users get an error message when they try to run TomTom Navigator or connect their GPS hardware, such as "unable to connect GPS" or "enter the name of the driver for this device". As of Navigator Upgrade 2.02 this problem is fixed. I cannot get my NavMan GPS to work with TomTom Navigator Please note that your NavMan GPS requires NavMan software components (such as NavManCom.DLL, iPAQDDK.DLL, and OptPack.DLL). These are distributed together with your NavMan Hardware. The TomTom GPS package does not include these proprietary NavMan drivers any more. You can download the latest Navman drivers from the Navman website. I cannot tick the box to activate the Navigator GPS ("Port does not exist") Turn off infrared on your Pocket PC: Go to Start ---> Settings ---> Connections tab ---> beam ---> turn off "receive incoming beams" Close any program on your Pocket PC that uses the COM1 port. If you use a foldable keyboard then please disable the driver for the keyboard because that also uses the COM1 port. There is no GPS signal visable on the Pocket PC ("Position of GPS unreliable") 1. The GPS will not work inside. You need to be outside, in an open area and not next to a high building. You also need to select the correct GPS and port in the GPS software. The box at the top of the GPS screen should be ticked. This means that the GPS is activated. Turn off the infrared receiver on your Pocket PC: Go to Start ---> Settings ---> Connections tab ---> beam ---> turn off "receive incoming beams" Now wait for a fix. This may take as long as 45 minutes the first time you try to get a fix with the GPS. Thereafter this should only take a few seconds. 2. Some cars have an 'athermic heat reflecting windshield'. This can block the GPS signal. Very often, cars with such heat reflecting windshields have an area of normal glass at the top of the windshield to let signals pass through. This is usually just behind the rear-view mirror. If you cannot get a signal, place your GPS in that position. Alternatively, you can use an external GPS antenna or buy an extension lead to extend the GPS cable and place the GPS receiver in the back of your car (but remember: your GPS receiver should have a free view of sky). It is also possible to put the GPS at the side of your dashboard where the signal is often better. You could also place it in the back of your car using a standard phone extension cable. The window at the back should not block the GPS signal. Another option is to put the GPS on your roof using the magnetic base of the GPS. There is no GPS cable (charger) in my TTN package The GPS cable is supplied separately. If you do not have such a cable contact your retailer where you bought the TomTom product. Verify that you have the correct cable! Pocket PC's come with different types of connectors; make sure that you have a cable that fits your Pocket PC's connector. My PDA becomes very slow when using a Bluetooth GPS Make sure you have set up a Bluetooth connection between your Bluetooth GPS and your PDA. Please refer to your PDA manual for instructions on how to set up a Bluetooth connection. I am unable to turn on my pocket pc when using Wireless GPS (iPAQ 1940/ 2210/ 5550/ upgraded 3970 /5450 using Windows Mobile 2003) This issue has been solved with the latest GPS version 2.07. However, we do advise you to exit the application before turning off your pocket PC. Due to the Bluetooth wake up option in Windows Mobile 2003, leaving the Bluetooth communication open will result in a loss of battery power. This can also lead to loss of data. To exit the application, click the TomTom Navigator tab on the navigator menu and select Exit Application. You can find the upgrade on the TomTom web site at http://www.tomtom.com/support/ce/support/gps.php Please note that this upgrade does not apply to the iPAQ 1940

Route calculation It seems to take very long to calculate a route TomTom Navigator is one of the fastest planners around. If planning seems to take too long, the following notes may prove useful:
What's the use of the "shortest route" option? The "shortest route" option calculates the shortest travel distance between A and B. Such routes are seldom useful except when walking, driving a bicycle, or for short distances in busy cities where your driving speed is effectively the same whatever road you take. Hardly anybody would want to drive long-distance "short" routes (it may literally take you hours more travel time to save a few miles in distance). Also note that there is (by definition!) no way to optimize the calculation of a "shortest route". What's the use of the "strict calculation" of routes? The "calculation speed" property (in the "route" tab) is an advanced feature, and in principle is meant to be set permanently to the value of your preference. "Strict" calculation can take a long time, especially on long distances. Roughly speaking, this option exhaustively checks "every little alley just in case it provides a short-cut that will reduce your trip by some extra seconds or meters". It is suitable for people who plan their trips the day before they drive them, and very suitable for people who need the best possible routes on lots of short distances, such as taxi drivers or city couriers. But in general, we recommend that you set it to "normal calculation" (or "fast calculation" if you regularly feel that normal calculation takes too much time). Note that the setting only affects the calculation of the "fastest route". Theory demands that the calculation of a shortest route is always "strict".

Installing problems I cannot install the maps onto my Pocket PC "Cannot determine location of data. Please re-install data and/or application" Check the sizes of the maps. Do you have enough free space in the internal memory of your Pocket PC? If not, install the maps on an external memory card. Please, refer to your Pocket PC manual about how to increase storage memory. When I install the software, the following error occurs: "Your pc does not support the devices for which there are applications in this package. Please install the supporting software first and run setup again. Setup will end now." 1. Ensure that your Pocket PC can communicate with your PC using ActiveSync®. Please refer to your Pocket PC manual. 2. You can also try using the latest setup.exe available from: http://www.tomtom.com/support/ce/setup.php How do I install if I have a MacOS/Unix/etc. As mentioned on the packaging, our installer runs under Windows and will not run under other operating systems such as Macintosh's MacOX. However, all components on our CD-ROMs are in normal Pocket PC "CAB" format, and the manuals are stored in standard web browser format:

Other problems The application freezes, or silently exits As of Navigator Upgrade 2.01 a problem was fixed that can cause TomTom Navigator 2.0 to become unstable, specifically on devices with the latest ROM revisions, such as the Compaq Ipaq 3970 or the Dell Axim. Under those ROM revisions, the application may freeze or even silently exit when trying to find out which city a certain location belongs to. This can only happen for very specific locations, but for those, it will happen every time. The most common circumstances under which you might encounter this problem are: - when you tap & hold such a location and turn it into a favourite location, or try to navigate to it - when you pass such a location while navigating in "safe mode" I can't turn a location into a favourite/destination etc. As of Navigator Upgrade 2.02 a problem was fixed that prevented certain locations from being turned into favourites, destination, departure etc. or to navigate to such a favourite or home. The application has become extremely slow We have received feedback that TomTom Navigator becomes extremely slow on certain Ipaq devices when reading map data from the SD (Secure Digital) memory card. This problem occurs on Ipaq 3950 devices running ROM version 1.11 and on Ipaq 3970 devices running ROM 2.10. In fact, all software that accesses large amounts of information on the SD card seems to become slow on devices running these ROM versions. The only suggestion we can currently offer is to downgrade back to a lower ROM version. To change ROM versions please go to the HP software and drivers website. Please contact HP technical support for further information about ROM updates. I have a problem with the contacts integration For step by step instructions on how to use contacts integration please read the support page about contact integration. Please Note: As of Navigator Upgrade 2.01 a problem was fixed that can occur when you use the Contact application to show or navigate to a housenumber that is unreachable by car - initially resulting in a dialog box that shows a message without a location name ("Are you sure you want to navigate to?"). Plug-in POI databases Many different TomTom Navigator processes compete for PocketPC resources, and there is a limit to the total number of Point-of-Interest databases that can be "dynamically plugged in" to a particular map. TomTom Navigator will stop loading POI databases when it has reached this limit. The exact limit depends on the number of built-in POI databases, which varies per map. As of Navigator Upgrade 2.02 you can have 128 POI categories active at the same time. This includes the built-in categories, but it still means that you can plug in at least 50 (and on average 65) POI databases. Version 2.02 also warns you when it discoveres more POI databases than it can handle. Further information about how to create and install plug-in databases can be found here. On a final note, please be aware that if you enable a lot of POI databases at the same time, map drawing can become noticably slower. Postal codes in Great Britain and other countries TomTom Navigator allows you to use the postal digits as a short-cut for entering the city name. This only works in countries that use purely numerical prefixes which furthermore uniquely identify particular cities (although the reverse need not be true, i.e. a particular city does not necessarily have to have a single code). Great Britain uses a different, non-numerical postal code system. Beta testing proved that the 3-character alfanumeric codes available did not save time compared to typing in the first three letters of a city, and in fact conflicted with our spelling-correction and "sounds as" technology. For the Great Britain maps, this "city aliasing" is therefore not supported, even though some beta versions included it. Instead, in Great Britain beta testing identified a different need, and here (only in Great Britain) TomTom Navigator 2 provides the postal "street name postfix", allowing you to distinguish between same-named streets in different parts of a city. I have a problem with the map called "Sweden" Please read the support page about the Sweden map. iPAQ 5450 TomTom Navigator exits with no error message. iPAQ 5450 users may experience problems when using certain Multimedia memory cards. Software applications with data (e.g. maps) on the memory card may suddenly exit without giving an error message. This problem is solved with the new HP iPAQ 5450 ROM update available from the HP software and drivers site. Please contact HP for further information about ROM updates.
