We’ve been using maps for thousands of years. The oldest surviving examples are Babylonian. Clay tablets some 4300 years old.
And while the details they depict may be simple by modern standards, to come up with the idea of a diagram that allows a traveller to find his or her way about really was a stroke of collective genius, and a major breakthrough in human development.
