Question

How much data traffic does TomTom Traffic generate?

Answer

The table below provides a calculation of average data usage for each country per month. Assumptions:

  • TomTom Traffic is enabled during morning and afternoon rush hours each working day
  • Traffic information is retrieved at least every 5 minutes
  • The full country map is loaded, so all available country information is retrieved
  • You travel in or near a major urban area.

The information that is exchanged between the TomTom Traffic Server and the Traffic Plug-In is minimized through compression and smart filtering algorithms, so that communication costs are minimal.

The amount of data that is exchanged depends on:

  • The frequency of use - every time you request a traffic update, new data if available will be exchanged.
  • At what time of day you request information - during rush hour there are more incidents. So, during rush hour more data is retrieved than at night or during midday, when it is close to none.
  • For what map you request information - information is retrieved for the map that is loaded in your TomTom application. The larger the map coverage the more data is retrieved. Yet, on the map of a large country or continent, only the data in your area is retrieved. Keeping the data sent to a minimum.

Please note: when using maps covering a continent (Western Europe, North America), long term traffic incidents for the entire continent are downloaded once and kept up to date. Only the short term incidents in your vicinity are downloaded.

To use TomTom Traffic, you need a wireless data connection (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS or CDMA) via a mobile phone, offering unrestricted Internet access.
Your mobile operator will only charge you for the amount of data traffic. Connection time is irrelevant.

Check with your mobile operator for availability and data charges. Operators generally offer monthly data bundles at cheaper rates. Some offer unlimited data usage for a fixed monthly fee.
